Basic Scones

scones

Here are my basic scones for January's Daring Baker's challenge. I really enjoy scones, and make them fairly often (at least, in comparison to how often I consume other breads, which isn't that frequently). I find that quick breads don't hurt my stomach as much, for whatever reason. Also, I really like anything that tastes primarily of butter. Especially with butter on top.

Roasted Butternut Squash Soup, with Pear

butternut squash soup
This soup does not contain bananas, but (quite against my will) my house does.

This is my favourite soup. It might be your favourite soup, too. It's also really easy if you already have a batch of home-made chicken stock in your house and you haven't contracted a fear of your immersion blender as a result of a horrible exhaustion-plus-stupidity-plus-walnut-pesto accident that landed you in the emergency room with the end of an immersion blender attached to the end of your arm.

Christmas Lamb 2011

lamb recipe
Paleo-Friendly!
I didn't make dessert for Christmas dinner. It was just Jake and I, so I wanted to keep things simple. Thus, I replaced the normal Christmas elaborations in favour of eating POUNDS AND POUNDS OF LAMB.

Sourdough

sourdough recipe
This isn't any sort of recipe, it's just everything delicious that was left in my house stacked on top of bread. Cheese, bacon, caramelized onion, possibly avocado.

Making my own sourdough starter this month was fun. It's fun to leave something to rot  ferment on your counter until it smells disgusting  alive and then make food out of it that is actually delicious.

David's Chocolate Boubon Pecan Pie

It snowed. So I made pie.

I mean, it was American Thanksgiving. So I made pie.

Well, okay. I made pie with no excuse. It also happened to snow. And be Thanksgiving.

Baby Shower Cookies

baby shower cookies
I think it's gonna be a girl

I'm not a huge fan of sugar cookies compared to other more homely and yet more delicious cookies. But. . . they are so damn PRETTY that I make them anyway. The recipe I made recently, however, was really rather delicious (even better as uncooked dough balls stolen from the fridge during the night). Possibly the best sugar cookies I've ever had. So I'm going to go ahead and share the recipe. The cookies come out tender and just a bit chewy.

Sans Rival

sans rival
Mmm, triangular slice of rectangular cake.

I didn't really find the Sans Rival to be aptly named. It tasted a lot like a big wafer cookie. The meringue was good, though I think that the mild flavour of the cashews got a bit lost. The icing was good, but too sweet. Together, it was pretty lack-lustre. Really, does a cake made almost entirely of icing sound good to you?

Povitica

povitica
Delicious AND pretty.

This was my first Daring Baker challenge. How exciting. It was delicious, and surprisingly easy. I'll make it again if I ever come across a fantastic nut sale. Or I might train the crows outside my window to bring me nuts in exchange for. . . peanuts. Hmm. Maybe that won't work.

Dear internet, feel free to send me nuts.

Also, cash.
